Descenso del Sella
An annual event starting in the town of Arriondas, where we stayed, the Descenso del Sella is a major international sporting event/fiesta/jamboree in which people attempt to canoe (in vessels of varying shapes and sizes) 19km from Arriondas to Ribadesella on the coast, along the length of the River Sella. The atmosphere was half London Marathon and half It's A Knockout. If you ever doubted that it was possible to have a traffic jam on a river, look no further.
